The boot is your footprint on the path to your calling, the mud is the journey you go through, and the water of life welling up shows you where to find the money to live your calling.

Questing for your Calling will Show you where the Money Is

Over the years I’ve been helping folks follow their calling, I’ve been led many times to say that our calling is not necessarily meant to be monetized.

That’s true.

But it’s not the whole story:

Your Calling won’t necessarily show you where the money is

but questing for it Will

Your calling may or may not want to be monetized. But the realization I am celebrating with this post is that it darn sure will show you what you need to do to afford to follow it.

If you are listening.

Your calling may or may not want to be monetized. But it darn sure will show you what you need to do to afford to follow it.

Money shows up on the Quest

It is taking the step, taking the next right action learned from listening to your calling itself, that brings the money to you–or more properly, brings you to the money. You can stop worrying now, and get on with your calling!

The Divine gave you your calling. It didn’t give your calling to you for someone else. To make someone else happy, or rich, or well-fed, or safe, or anything else. They first and foremost put it in your heart as a gift to you, and receiving that gift is the first step in receiving the money flow to live your calling.

Receiving that gift is the first step in receiving the money flow to live your calling.

Your calling may very well be to feed others, make them happy or safe, and bring them money. Mine includes that last one for sure, for both organizations and individuals.

But I don’t do it for you. I do it for me.

I think when we can say “I do this for me” we have got something essential and powerful that we need in order to stick to following our calling.

Relying on others to make your calling meaningful is like relying on someone else to go to the bathroom or breathe for you. It sounds good, but it won’t work. We’re just not set up that way, and neither is our calling. It’s meant for you to actualize, and money is a part of that actualization we will have to stick to in order to make happen.

You might notice I am using very unglamorous metaphors for your calling. This is part of my recent turnaround. Money is not glamorous* and your calling will find you the money to follow it if you let it.

What was I thinking?

I am a money coach, for goodness’ sake, what was I thinking? Of course people want me to find them the money to follow their calling. And I do. And will. Including for you if you are interested in doing it according to my step-by-step program described in the masterclass offered here.

It is almost as though I was avoiding the money piece when folks would ask me about it. Like: oh, I’m above that. (Hardly! I’m into money and helping folks have money they want and need. I just choose carefully whom I work for.)

It’s true that I don’t want you to become materialistic about your calling. Or reductive. Or directive. I want you to listen to it. And it, itself, will not always be the thing that makes you money.

But we (I) don’t need to fetishize or avoid the fact that you will literally stumble upon money to follow your calling if you get off your a** and follow it. FOLLOW is the operative word. It is there to guide you. So, you have to be willing to be surprised and let it lead you. If you’re not surprised, you’re definitely not following your calling. You’re following your rational mind, advertising, something you read, or something else. (Pick one and remind yourself the next time you try to second-guess your calling.)

You have to surrender to its guidance. And yes, it will take care of you. It will lead you places that will surprise, delight, mystify, challenge, and irk the s**t out of you sometimes. And you will go beyond those limits you have argued for so strenuously and you will grow.

Being Guided to the Money to Follow Your Calling is PART of your Calling

By this point of helping folks with my program, I have encountered many people creating many obstacles to following their calling. I apparently was one of them! Here’s more about the obstacle I created and how I uncreated it.

Calling = a meaningful life

My calling is helping others follow theirs. I am desperate, passionate, a Fool, for people living a meaningful life. That’s my calling.

Our calling is the meaning of our lives. It’s much, much, much greater than our rational minds or something we read. It’s put there by the Best, which is also Us in another guise.

We do well to follow our calling to have a meaningful, rich, important life in our own eyes. And those are the only eyes that matter. Because if we don’t trust our own eyes, we have no internal guidance system. And then the zillion and one external guidance systems that are out there can prey upon us and twist us around and tweak us to their own devices. Uh-uh. Learn to trust yourself. Learn to listen to yourself. Tuning in to your calling is a bright first step. (Or, probably, a next step if you read this blog, because you’re already on the path of trusting yourself.)

Money is just another Obstacle Mile-marker en route to your calling

One of the numerous obstacles people create to following their calling is money. I know how to have money, make money, raise money, ask for money, invest money, and give money away. (If you think doing any of those well is easy, think again. Or ask me about it.) Why didn’t I see this before, that part of my calling is helping people see that their calling will lead them to the money to follow it? then helping them pick up and use the tools or pathways their calling shows them?

I was creating an obstacle to following my own calling! And this is what I am demonstrating in this blog post. You can feel the difference in what you’re reading: I’m back on the wagon. I’m following my calling. I’m not held back anymore by the obstacle I created, the limit I was arguing myself into shrinking inside. The obstacle looked like something so scary:

    • I did not have a single, replicable way to make money following your calling that I could give my people
    • I just noticed that to the extent everyone was following their calling, including me–we were making it!
    • I am not always making money following my calling
    • I am blessed to be a really good and well-paid editor alongside my calling;
    • I often fund my calling by editing!
    • This was a source of shame? (It seems so silly now)
    • It is now a source of pride: your calling will guide you to the money you need to follow it. My work is to help you release the fear, self-doubt, trauma, and triggers that keep you from following its guidance where it leads you. Including to the money but especially to joy and fulfillment.

It all seems so simple now that I am past this obstacle.

Thank you, obstacle! for being a mile-marker on my journey. I can see how far I’ve come thanks to you. And I surely do see this now as part of my calling.

So, bring it on! To get into my Claim Your Calling program, meet with me free of charge to talk through what you’ve understood about what I offer in the webinar here. And we’ll find out if it’s for you.

*We can however cast glamours with it–a “glamour” being a kind of spell.

I love your words Beth: “They first and foremost put it in your heart as a gift to you, and receiving that gift is the first step in receiving the money flow to live your calling.” Trusting the calling when money is not following (or preceeding!) the calling is a big test and has made me doubt fully following my calling. I have a small side income which is not my calling and brings some money in but I would love to devote myself exclusively to my calling. Recently I have seen many inner blocks to promoting myself disappear and that to me is a great sign of progress. I love your concept that this urging to my calling is a gift to me that I could gracefully accept. My calling is beautiful but I sometimes wish it had been to be a rich lawyer instead! Thanks for a beautifully written, thought provoking article as always. Blessings to you.

Esther, I deeply appreciate your humor (wishing your calling had been to be a rich lawyer). It is clear to me from what you wrote that you are surrendering to your calling. I love that you are seeing blocks disappaer. I love that you are surrendering more and more to your calling. It really is a calling which means it has a language, it has a way to reach you if you listen. And of course, I don’t just mean you, I mean all of us. Thanks so much for writing me here!
